HEALTH & SAFETY POLICY

At Frederic Chopin Integrative Saturday School in Bath we are committed to ensuring that all users are aware of and comply with our Health and Safety guidelines. FCISS take Health and Safety extremely seriously as a matter of legal and moral importance. FCISS aim to ensure the health and safety and welfare of all individuals who may be affected by the services we provide. The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 & The Workplace (Health, Safety & Welfare) Regulations 1992 will be complied with at all times.

  • We strive to create an environment that is safe and without risk to health.
  • We strive to prevent accidents and cases of work-related ill health
  • We strive to use, maintain and store equipment safely
  • We strive to ensure that all staff are competent in the work in which they are engaged

BEST PRACTICE PROCEDURE

All staff go through a health and safety induction, including awareness of all health and safety regulations regarding working within FCISS.

All equipment and premises will be well maintained. All electrical equipment used will go through a P.A.T (Portable, Appliance, Test) yearly. Throughout the year, all electrical equipment goes through a visual inspection before use, any faults will be recorded and equipment removed from use.

All resources/equipment go through:

  • A visual inspection before/after use to ensure equipment is maintained appropriately.
  • A periodically ‘Shake, Rattle & Roll’ inspection will be done to check on wear and tear of equipment.
  • Any broken, damaged or worn equipment will be removed to be either repaired or disposed of

Before a room is used by children/ young people:

  • A Health & Safety check is carried out by service leaders before children/young people arrive on site. If a hazard is identified, staff will make it safe, remove it or make it inaccessible. The hazard is recorded on the Health & Safety checklist, and reported to the Management Committee for a follow up.
  • All accidents, incidents, visits to hospital (with or without treatment), and dangerous occurrences will be reported, recorded and reviewed (including informing local Health and Safety Executive and OFSTED where relevant).
  • Risk assessments are carried out to identify aspects of the environment that need to be checked on a regular basis, and specific activities and resources (refer to FCISS’s “Risk Assessment Policy”)
  • Any recorded accidents are regularly checked to identify recurring problems.
  • Children are given guidelines to ensure their safety, are made aware of any dangers and actively encouraged to consider H&S through discussion

Staff Responsibilities:

  • Take reasonable care for your own health and safety as well as any person who may be affected by your actions or omissions at work.
  • Report any accidents, incidents or dangerous occurrences that have led to or may in future be likely to lead to, injury or damage and assist in the investigation of any such events.
  • A valid Public liability insurance and employers liability insurance is in place. The certificate is displayed in the office, copies are stored on the parent’s notice board.
  • Our induction for staff includes a clear explanation of health and safety issues so that all adults are able to adhere to our policy and understand their shared responsibility for health and safety.
  • The induction covers matters including safe lifting and the storage of potentially dangerous substances.
  • Records are kept of these induction training sessions and new staff are asked to sign the records to confirm that they have taken part.
  • As necessary, health and safety training is included in the annual training plans of staff and safety is discussed regularly at staff meetings.
  • We have a no smoking policy.
  • Children/young people are made aware of health and safety issues through discussions, planned activities and routines.
  • We display the necessary health and safety poster in the office.
